We love playing games at fall festivals and winning prizes. At fall festivals you can find all kinds of fun games and activities for the whole family to enjoy and win prizes. One of the best fall festivals in Northern Virginia is also one of its longest-running. The 78h annual Waterford Fair is the oldest juried crafts fair in Virginia. Stroll through historic downtown Waterford and interact with craftspeople working in traditional methods plus live entertainers. There is children’s entertainment and activities, Colonial encampments, garden tours, and more so everyone can enjoy the weekend.

Invite area shelters to bring pups that are up for adoption, local dog bakeries to bring treats, and of course encourage costumes for the pet parade. Chili Cook Off - This is every chef’s chance to shine — and the rest of us get to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Invite local celebrities to judge the contest and make sure to include categories like spiciest and best overall.
Add our colorful sensory riceand candy corn and you’re good to go. To make the hunt for candy even more fun, paint our egg cartons with candy corn colors so seekers can place their found candy corns in the slots easily. To challenge seekers even more, try our jumbo tweezers to encourage fine motor skills. You can even include a little competition and teamwork with a relay race. This popular event sells out so get your tickets early. Visit the farm website to purchase tickets. Prime weekends can get crowded so arrive early or choose a weekday visit. Visitors to the fair can also explore all of the fun and interesting things to do at George Washington’s Mount Vernon. Fair activities are included with the general admission price.
You can have all sorts of fun with a pet dress-up day. Costume Parade – Have everyone dress up in their favorite Halloween costumes for a family-friendly parade. Petting Zoo – You can hire a local farm or petting zoo company to bring goats, bunnies, mini donkeys or ponies, and other animals. Pumpkin Bake Off – From pumpkin pie to pumpkin brownies, there are tons of delicious fall recipes to choose from. Have a bake-off and let everyone vote on their favorite pumpkin recipe. Pumpkin Guts Treasure Hunt – This one is for those folks who love gooey pumpkin guts.

Scavenger Hunt – Hide fall items around the party area for the guests to find. You can have different prize levels for those who find all the items, the most items, or items in the shortest amount of time. Pumpkin Weigh In – Gather a group of irregularly sized pumpkins and do a weigh-in to see which is the heaviest. You can have one grand weigh-in at the end of the event or have weigh-ins throughout the harvest festival where the closest guesser in each group gets a prize.
Scarecrow Making Contest - Practically considered the mascot for fall, a scarecrow will keep the birds away and the kids entertained when they build one. Make sure to have hay and some old clothes on hand. Pie-Palooza - From sweet potato pie to pecan and chess, pretty much everyone likes a creative piece of pie.
Pumpkin Painting Contest
Let the guests take turns trying to bite into an apple while their hands are behind their backs. The first person to grab the most apples wins! If this doesn’t feel very sanitary, you can try to get the apples out with nets – just be sure to make it challenging. Dunk Tank – Have a fall-themed dunk tank for guests to take turns trying to dunk a friend.
