Pho Gyu Vietnamese Noodle House, Los Angeles Roadtrippers

pho house

Broken rice served with a plethora of proteins is what it’s all about at this long-standing restaurant. Toppings include shredded pork dusted in roasted rice powder, pork meatloaf, grilled shrimp paste, grilled pork, and more. Pho Ga District is frequently slammed during the lunch rush hour, but Diana and Eric have a knack for navigating the crowds and remembering regulars’ usual orders. The restaurant only seats about people, and all seats are usually taken. The clear and balanced chicken broth is absolutely worth the wait.

Thien Tam Vegetarian Restaurant

The extensive menu runs the gamut, but regulars can’t resist the pho ga (chicken noodle soup) and the bun bo Hue (Hue-style beef and lemongrass noodle soup). Follow it up with the com hen — a bowl of steamed rice, baby clams, sesame seeds, and fresh herbs served with a light clam broth. Golden Deli is so popular that on most weeknights, dinner service often requires a 30 minute wait. With locations in San Gabriel and Temple City, Golden Deli has been a long-time fixture of the SGV’s pho game.

Sáu Can Tho Vietnamese Kitchen

It’s hard to find a place that does seafood noodle soup as well as Quan Hop does. The restaurant usually plays ambient jazz tunes, and the overall vibe of the restaurant is slow and relaxed compared to some of the more fast-paced pho counterparts nearby. A good bowl of pho can be judged on the quality of its broth, which usually takes hours to simmer to a beautiful depth of flavor. The most traditional broth is made from a beef base, but a pho ga (chicken pho) can be a warm hug for the soul. Los Angeles is also excellent at looking out for its vegetarians, and your meat-eating correspondent orders the pho chay (veggie pho) at certain spots because it’s just that well-crafted. The signature dish at Sáu Can Tho is baked catfish (ca dut lo hau giang).

Vietnamese Sandwiches

Chef and owner Uyên Lê takes great pride in every dish on the menu, but is particularly fond of the banh mi. The sandwiches come stuffed with lemongrass chicken, pork, and beef; try the chef’s favorite vegan sandwich filled with tofu and a house-made pate. Phở, pronounced "fuh," is a Vietnamese soup that is normally made with a beef-bone broth, banh pho noodles, and thinly sliced beef, that's often served with bean sprouts and other fresh herbs on the side. While Quan Hop offers a perfectly serviceable beef pho, perhaps what they’re best known for is their seafood. Their bun rieu is a crab meat noodle soup, while their bun ca tom cua contains both salmon and crab meat.

Pho 79 was one of the first pho restaurants in the region when it opened in 1982, and it helped to foster Southern California’s wider pho movement. For its contributions, it received the James Beard Award in 2019, later followed by the Michelin Bib Gourmand distinction in 2021. It’s unsurprising, as the beef brisket pho is aromatic, rich, and one of the best bowls of noodles you’ll find in the state. Banh Xeo Quan, also known as Mr. Rice, specializes in Vietnamese crepes. Owner Phi Tran opened the restaurant to bring this southern Vietnamese specialty to the San Gabriel Valley. Banh xeo, which literally means “sizzling cake,” earned its name from the sound the batter makes when it hits the scorching pan.

The Vietnamese soup pho, pronounced as “fuh,” takes that bowl to the next level. Pho usually consists of rice noodles, thinly sliced meat and herbs all submerged in a steaming bone broth. Find Vietnamese comfort and street foods at Bé Ù in East Hollywood.

Kim Hoa Hue

An order of the nem cua be, beautifully blistered crab and pork egg rolls, is an absolute must. "From spicy beef broths to delicious vegan bowls, there’s a pho out there for just about anyone, the article reads. "Snuggle up, grab your big spoon, and scroll down to find the top pho spot near you." Owner and chef Kevin Tran makes fresh tofu each day for his savory and sweet vegan fare. The Iron Man pho satisfies, while the warm and sweet ginger tofu “pudding” comes through for dessert. The second location in Cerritos is just as solid as the original.

Vermicelli

"If a chain appeared on the list more than once, we only included the highest rated location," Yelp said, noting all businesses on the list were marked as open as of Oct. 28, 2020. First, it identified businesses in the restaurant and food categories with a large concentration of reviews that mentioned "pho." The material on this site may not be reproduced, distributed, transmitted, cached or otherwise used, except with the prior written permission of Advance Local. With 20 years of experience cooking in Vietnamese restaurants, our chef is excited to present their vision to you and all our guests. Our caring and committed staff make sure you have a fantastic experience with us. TACO, you receive a variety of quick and cost-effective benefits for far less than what we price our traditional advertisements and social media mentions at.

Find southern-style Vietnamese food at this perpetually busy, efficiently run, and solid-as-can-be restaurant. Come for the blistered cha gio stuffed with ground pork and woodear mushrooms, and stay for a bowl of pho, a platter of broken rice, or cool vermicelli noodles. Pho 87 is something of an institution in Chinatown—the lunchtime crowd offers a peek into a wide-ranging cross-section of L.A. Everyone from office workers to police officers to Latino and Asian families can be found sitting under Pho 87’s blasting AC units. Service is fast, efficient, and no-nonsense, and the guys who run Pho 87 know how to turn tables like it’s nobody’s business.

Dig into platters of broken rice prettied with seasoned wheat gluten molded into various forms, as well as classic noodle soups that manage to satisfy without any animal proteins. The line moves fast, though, and the beef pho makes the wait worth it. PhoHolic is better known for offering huge beef bones and oxtail bones on the side—they usually come in pairs and can be cut with scissors. A list of the region’s best pho is not complete without Pho 79 in Garden Grove.

Usarestaurants.info is not a booking agent, and does not charge any service fees to users of our site. The bread, impeccably fresh and made in-house at all hours of the day, provides an impressive canvas for the scratch-made pickles, pate, bologna, and head cheese. Vietnamese meatballs (nem) are a curiously loud bunch that snap and squeak at first bite. Here, grilled pork meatballs and skewers are served on grand platters along with rice papers for wrapping and a forest of greens for garnishing.

While the Sawtelle location is their flagship, the La Brea one is generally less crowded and more quiet. The vegetarian pho at Nong La Cafe is also a standout, filled with mushrooms, tofu, and vegetables — when I want to bring vegetarians along for a pho trek, Nong La is my go-to. Saigon Cafe in Millburn was crowned the best place for pho on Yelp's list titled "Top Pho in Every State." Saigon Cafe also has a Jersey City location.

From vegan Buddhist fare at Vinh Loi Tofu in Reseda to northern Vietnamese hits at Pho Ngoon in San Gabriel, here now are 19 fabulous Vietnamese restaurants to try in Los Angeles. The Essex Street restaurant incorporates family recipes, its website says, and has a wide variety of pho including chicken, veggie, beef, tofu, seafood and even make-your-own pho. There are many pho restaurants named “Pho Saigon,” but the “Pho Saigon Republic” we’re thinking of is the one located in the heart of Chinatown. The place was formerly known as Pho Hoa before receiving a rebrand in recent years. Service can sometimes be brusque and hurried, but the beef broth is rich and full of flavor.

Loud Vietnamese or Chinese music is often blaring from the televisions, and a crew of older men flurry about delivering dishes and bussing tables. I’m not even sure there’s a bathroom in the place, but I keep going back. Find Thien Huong Restaurant tucked into the ground floor of Far East Plaza in Chinatown.

The fish’s prized crispy skin, charred in some spots and golden throughout, gives way to moist and tender flesh imbued with honey and turmeric. Served on the side are herbs and lettuce, pickled carrots and daikon, cucumber spears, vermicelli rice noodles, rice papers, and best of all, a tangy-sweet tamarind dipping sauce. The key to excellent Vietnamese vegetarian fare is a killer mock nuoc cham (fish sauce vinaigrette), and nobody makes it better than the folks at Thien Tam.

Kevin McGrath Update: Carnival Cruise Under Pressure Over Missing Passenger

missing carnival cruise ship passenger found

McGrath’s disappearance comes just one week after a young college student fell overboard off the world’s largest cruise ship, the Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas. This is not the first person to go missing from the Carnival Valor this year. In February, a 32-year-old woman jumped overboard 150 miles south of the mouth of the Mississippi River.

The Coast Guard confirmed that its crews are "actively searching near the Port of Miami and along the South Florida shore" after the missing person's report Monday. Miami-Dade police issued a missing person's alert Tuesday morning for McGrath, who was last seen in a black shirt, shorts and gray sneakers. Police said he "may be in need of services" and asked anyone with information to contact authorities. "Carnival Valor retraced its route to support the search and rescue," Lupoli said, and the ship has since been released by the Coast Guard and is again sailing toward Cozumel, Mexico.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. The agency has officially identified the missing man as Tyler Barnett of Houma, Louisiana. Carnival Cruises has come under pressure to answer questions surrounding the disappearance of a passenger over the Labor Day weekend.

Dramatic video shows Coast Guard rescuing man who went overboard on Carnival cruise

Under the 2010 Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act, cruise ships must have 42-inch guard rails and man-overboard imaging or detection systems. However, not all cruise ships have implemented recently developed automatic man-overboard-detection technology, which uses thermal cameras and radars to immediately alert crew members when a person goes overboard. A total of 212 overboard incidents were reported on cruise ships from 2009 to 2019, according to a report commissioned by the industry-trade group Cruise Lines International Association. "We are beyond grateful that this case ended with a positive outcome," said Lt. Seth Gross, a Sector New Orleans search and rescue mission coordinator. James Michael Grimes survived in the Gulf of Mexico for 20 hours after going overboard the Carnival Valor cruise ship last November. He said he spent hours treading water while fending off ocean dwellers and was ultimately spotted by the crew of a bulk carrier vessel before being rescued by the Coast Guard.

“He can be seen climbing on a lifeboat and jumping from there,” the spokesperson said. The search for Barnett was called off Thursday after authorities scoured more than 5,600 square miles of the Gulf of Mexico, to no avail, the Coast Guard announced. McGrath was with a big group of relatives on the three-day cruise to celebrate his father’s 60th birthday, his sister Danielle McGrath told USA Today. The US Coast Guard suspended its search Thursday for a Carnival Cruise passenger who mysteriously vanished from the ship during a family vacation to celebrate his father’s 60th birthday. "I will say one of the highlights of my Coast Guard career was calling the family who was onboard the Carnival Valor to letting them know their son was alive and en route to additional medical care," Lt. Gross said. "Truly just a miracle especially on a holiday like Thanksgiving where it's predominantly around family and spending time together."

The cruise ship's operator, Carnival Cruise Line, told Insider in a statement that the man — whose identity was not immediately released — was reported missing by his companion late Monday afternoon. Carnival Cruises is continuing its investigation into McGrath’s disappearance and has been repeatedly reviewing closed-circuit video footage from the ship, a spokesperson told The Post Thursday. “A search of the ship’s cameras and security devices did not indicate he went overboard,” a police spokesperson told The Post.

Carnival crew conducted an "extensive" search on board the ship but failed to find McGrath. McGrath was not detected by any of the ship's surveillance systems, including security cameras and US Customs and Border Patrol during the debarkation process. While the chances of falling off a cruise ship are extremely low, at least nine other people have gone overboard this year, as BI previously reported.

When the family gathered for breakfast in the morning, McGrath did not show up. Miami Dade police confirmed to USA Today that a search by ship staff and security took place once all passengers had disembarked, but McGrath was nowhere to be found. USCG Lt. Seth Gross, a Sector New Orleans search and rescue mission coordinator, said the Carnival Valor had traveled 200 miles into the Gulf of Mexico since the missing passenger was last seen. That translated to a search area of more than 7,000 square nautical miles - roughly the size of the state of Massachusetts. Carnival Cruise Line tells WWL-TV that the 28-year-old man was reported missing around noon on Thursday while the ship was on its way to Cozumel.

In Carnival's statement to PEOPLE, a spokesperson said that on Tuesday, they were "advised of the possibility of him wearing a different shirt, which allowed our security team to change the profile of the guest as we searched onboard video." The Coast Guard launched search and rescue crews Thursday afternoon and alerted nearby ships to be watchful. Police and federal authorities are searching for a man who was reported missing Monday morning after a Carnival cruise ship returned to Miami. Nov. 14 (UPI) -- The Coast Guard is searching for a Louisiana passenger, from the Carnival Glory cruise ship, who was reported missing and believed to have jumped overboard as the ship traveled between New Orleans and Montego Bay, Jamaica.

A 2020 study from the industry trade group Cruise Lines International Association found that 19 people go overboard cruise ships each year on average. At least six people have gone overboard in the last three months, promoting debate over whether cruise ships should be required to install man-overboard detection systems. He was reported missing at approximately 7 a.m on Monday, a spokesperson with the cruise line told Insider. The Coast Guard has searched 3,600 square nautical miles for the missing passenger while dealing with difficult search conditions including limited visibility, large swells and gale force winds, according to Petty Officer Jose Hernandez.

Tyler Barnett of Houma, Louisiana, was last seen onboard just after midnight on Monday, the Coast Guard reported, after the ship left New Orleans but before its next scheduled stop in Montego Bay on Wednesday. Tyler Lee Barnett, 28, of Houma was reported missing by a family member Monday morning, just one day after the Carnival Glory disembarked from New Orleans for a weeklong cruise. The petition claims Carnival confirmed that according to the "onboard MOBtronics system," McGrath did not go overboard—but the family have not seen "verifiable proof" that the ship has this system on board. They also said Carnival had told them the company did not have any CCTV footage of McGrath.

She was never found, though several people have reported sightings, including a U.S. Merrian Carver was 40 when she went missing on a seven-day Royal Caribbean cruise in 2004 and her father later founded the International Cruise Victims organization. He claims Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises tried to cover up his daughter’s disappearance and worked against his investigators in the wake of the incident.

These are the destinations that the Carnival will be traveling to from New Orleans in 2024. So, apparently, the Legend is on an ULTRA sailing right now and I am trying to get information regarding the latest give-aways... I haven't been on a Ultra since reopening because I've been getting other, much better, offers.

Maybe they've improved since them, wait to hear from someone who has been on one recently. Carnival's ultra-luxury cruise brand Seabourn details cruises from Canada, including sailing to Alaska due to the country reopening to cruise ships. Giving our guests the best Premier Cruise experience is our number one priority. That’s why we’ve raised our game with changes that put you in charge of the way you play.

Ultra cruise before shutdown was great, good gifts, special drawings  in the casino, special party. "Gifts" in cabin were things like ball caps with "Premier" on them, other Premier branded  cheap stuff, guess they were cleaning out the warehouse. Big prize giveaway depended on which card you drew, guess we got bottom of the barrel.

Instead, at Rudi's, you'll find a don't-miss lobster mac and cheese, plenty of meat and seafood selections, and crabcakes that are actually worth the price of admission. Do you know if you get to choose which prize under each letter? Having it in the theater causes alot less interference with the rest of the casino activity. The way it was previously structured it was done along the walkways which didn't make much sense.

When you opened it you had a choice of three gifts - ours was a sound bar, a Dyson fan, or $500. Yes, Disney Cruise insurance covers the costs of replacing lost or stolen travel documents. Last year, my passport was stolen on a Disney Cruise, and they reimbursed me for the expenses of getting a new one.

Oblivion 2013 film Wikipedia

oblivion cruise

It's a smart technique for science-fiction storytelling; it eases the viewer into the world of the film. The problem is that the world "Oblivion" introduces — an abandoned, depopulated Earth — is more interesting than the story it tells. Or, more accurately, the stories it tells, because "Oblivion," derivative to a fault, tries to be several science-fiction movies at once. Jack escapes a scavenger trap while searching for a disabled drone inside the New York Public Library's ruins; meanwhile, a platform is destroyed.

Casting

Jack and Julia flee in the jet and destroy the drones chasing them, but they crash in the desert, where another clone of Jack arrives to fix disabled drones. Jack impersonates the clone to return to its base for medical supplies, where he encounters a clone of Victoria. Jack and Julia retrieve the Odyssey's flight recorder but are captured by scavengers and taken to the Raven Rock Mountain Complex. The leader, Malcolm, reveals that the scavengers are disguised human survivors hiding from the drones.

The actors were attracted to the love story amidst the action

If nothing else, "Oblivion" will go down in film history as the movie where Tom Cruise pilots a white, sperm-shaped craft into a giant space uterus. Cruise's sperm-ship enters through an airlock that resembles a geometrized vulva. He arrives inside a massive chamber lined with egg-like glass bubbles. At the center of the chamber is a pulsating, sentient triangle that is also supposed to be some kind of mother figure. Cruise must destroy the mother triangle and her space uterus in order to save the Earth. Enjoy the calypso music and cruise to The Caribbean, where crystal clear waters and sunny skies await on your Caribbean cruise.

Storyline

Though most of the movie's characters are women, not one of them is able to do anything without Harper's help — not even the mother triangle that lives in the space uterus. Only his rugged-but-sensitive masculinity holds the key to humanity's survival. The movie reaches for profundity, but all it grasps is misogyny. One day, Harper spots an antique spacecraft crashing into the countryside. He manages to rescue one survivor, a Russian astronaut (Olga Kurylenko) who looks exactly like the woman in his dreams.

To help you plan your moviegoing options, our editors have selected the most notable films releasing in April 2024, listed in alphabetical order. After what appear to be memory flashes of a previous life back in an early 21st century New York City on the part of Cruise’s Jack Harper, he and his partner Vika (Andrea Riseborough) wake up in what can only take the prize as the ultimate loft space, circa 2077, a perch that’s the last word in minimalist chic. It also affords unobstructed views of what’s been left behind after the catastrophe that saw the moon blown into pieces, which in turn resulted in earthly ruin and a subsequent evacuation of survivors to Saturn’s planet Titan. Visually striking but thinly scripted, Oblivion benefits greatly from its strong production values and an excellent performance from Tom Cruise.

There’s enough futuristic eye candy and battle scenes to lure the genre boys, while the presence of three important female characters, as well as Tom Cruise in good form, could attract more women than usual for this sort of fare, resulting in mostly robust, but not great, returns worldwide. Top cast

When Joseph Kosinski was first developing the story for "Oblivion," the director had no idea it would become an epic sci-fi action flick starring one of Hollywood's top actors. So as he initially wrote it back in 2005, the scale was decreased significantly. In an interview with Collider, he said, "I thought it would be my first film, so I wrote it as a contained cast. The Sky Tower was going to be the main setting. It was always the story of drone repairman Jack Harper and his journey of redemption." There have been many films set on an Earth depleted of humans, but few as visually enthralling as this one. Shot by Claudio Miranda of Life of Pi, Oblivion shares that film’s lovely light, nuanced coloration and virtually seamless meshing of live photography and effects. In neither film is it always possible to be entirely sure of what is real and what’s computer generated, but the result is beautiful however it breaks down.

In order to maintain the integrity of the mission, Harper and Vica's memories have been wiped; nonetheless, Harper is haunted by extremely cheesy black-and-white dreams of a beautiful woman meeting him in pre-invasion New York. "Oblivion" is set in the year 2077, 60 years after an alien invasion rendered the Earth largely uninhabitable. Cruise stars as Jack Harper, one of a handful of people left on the planet. Harper and colleagues remain as technicians, servicing robot drones that defend resource-gathering stations from alien stragglers. Back at Raven Rock, Malcolm tells them the Tet is an alien machine intelligence ship that is extracting the planet's resources. The moon's destruction caused catastrophic earthquakes and tsunamis on Earth, followed by an invasion from thousands of Jack clones.

Further twists and betrayals lie in store, but they feel more like obligatory plot complications than organic to the overall story. As a result, viewer engagement gradually lessens, leading to a climax that makes for thematic sense but dramatic head-scratching. The film's opening stretch is its one strong point —  a gradual, immersive build-up of details.

Universal must have been pleased with Joseph Kosinski's ability to film a sci-fi epic like "Oblivion" with a significantly lower budget than other similar movies of the genre. For comparison, the director told /Film, "'Tron' had fifteen or sixteen hundred visual effects shots in it and 'Oblivion' is eight hundred shots, so it's almost half. Because I was able to do so much in camera. Hopefully it feels like a big movie, which is what I always wanted to do, but we did it." Then in 2007, Kosinski hit a major roadblock as he strove to get the film made when the Writers' Guild went on strike, which forced him to alter his approach and make the tale into a graphic novel. In December, Tom Cruise starred as the title character in the film "Jack Reacher." In "Oblivion," which opened on Friday, he plays another Jack, one of few humans left on an Earth devastated by an alien invasion. "Oblivion" is based on a graphic novel co-written by Joseph Kosinski, who went on to direct the film, and it costars Morgan Freeman and Melissa Leo. The astronaut has been in cryogenic sleep for the past six decades but refuses to disclose the nature of her mission to Harper and Vica until they recover her flight recorder.

The survivors brought down the Odyssey spaceship for its nuclear reactor, with which to craft a bomb. Jack reprograms a captured drone to deliver the bomb to the Tet, but other drones attack the base, destroying the captured drone and gravely injuring Malcolm. Jack and Julia volunteer to deliver the bomb to the Tet manually. For a movie star who has traveled all over the world and filmed in numerous exotic locales, it would not be surprising if places are constantly being knocked off of Tom Cruise's bucket list. And this was certainly the case when filming began for "Oblivion," as he told Rotten Tomatoes Coming Soon, "I couldn't wait to go to Iceland. I've never been there. First of all, it's just [an] absolutely stunning country, and when you get there, it's hauntingly beautiful."
